General Literature and Composition

Course Description: 

This is a full-year course that serves as the introductory high school English course for all ninth grade students at Jim Elliot Christian School.  The curriculum focuses on two fundamental concepts during the first semester:  story structure and essay structure.  Units are designed to guide students to an understanding of fiction and non-fiction writing using a wide variety of texts and exercises.  Students will become familiar with the writing process as they prepare multiple draft revisions of major writing assignments.  Grammar, usage, and punctuation will be addressed in class-wide lessons and during individual writing conferences.  The curriculum focuses on two classic pieces of literature for the second semester using the Prentice Hall textbook.  The overall goal is to increase students’ knowledge of and appreciation for composition and literature.
